After a year of overseas endeavour, Canberra songstress Kim Yang returns to share new music and travel stories supported by wonderful local talent! Just in time for Christmas and before Kim heads to Woodford Folk Festival for her last 2023 show in Australia, Kim is popping into Smith’s Alternative for an intimate show. Kim will be joined by bandmates Hayden Kinsman on keys and Matt Nightingale on double bass, and special guest Clarissa Goh on cello.

Support act: Areta is a singer-songwriter who weaves confessional and autobiographical narratives through multi-layered lyricism. Her melancholic and poetic style is inspired by artists such as Ani Difranco and Paul Dempsey. Her voice draws emotions from the listener that reverberate long after the performance has finished.

Taiwanese-Australian songstress Kim Yang is coming to Canada for Vancouver's JADE MUSIC FEST, an annual music event which aims to make Vancouver the North American hub for Chinese-language music through the elevation of underrepresented Sinophone artists in BC. Both Artists will be performing in English and in their Native languages. “WE decided it would be exciting to try to bring some of the modern flavour of the JADE MUSIC FEST to Courtenay's Old Church Theatre” says Promoter Doug Cox, “and Kim agreed to come do a double bill with Vancouver's Tennyson King, who was a popular featured performer at this summer's VI MusicFest.” Come watch these two young performers weave their magic through story and song at Courtenay's intimate Old Church Theatre!

One of Canberra's most beloved singer-songwriters is leaving town!

In this special in-conversation style event, Upbeat's founder, Ruth O'Brien, will talk with Kim about what she's learned in recent years about how to build a career in music being based in Canberra. The chat will cover a mix of insights around songwriting, marketing yourself as an artist, building your audience and practical tips for next steps in your career as an independent artist. There will also be a Q & A at the end and a chance to mingle and meet others in music in Canberra.

Kim Yang is a Taiwanese-Australian singer-songwriter, her ethereal voice, evocative lyrics and soothing instrument fingerpicking capture the attention of passers-by.

Kim has supported and shared the stage with ARIA awarded artists including Katie Noonan, Josh Pyke, Ben Lee, Kate Ceberano and Fanny Lumsden. She is a regular at big gigs and festivals, including the National Folk Festival and Sydney Folk Festival this year.

Since 2019 Kim has released two EPs, one live album and received various grants from artsACT, including to produce her upcoming new project. Her music has been aired regularly on Double J radio and premiered on triple J.

This year Kim has been nominated as Artist of the Year by MusicACT and performed at the Australian of the Year ACT Awards ceremony.

Kim is currently expanding her skills as a songwriter and a home producer since receiving two arts grants from artsACT. She has been co-writing with various artists, including Katie Wighton (All Our Exes lives in Texas) and working on a few self-produced songs for her upcoming release in 2023.

It all started in 2017, from busking to big stages and touring, Taiwanese-Australian songstress Kim Yang has been known as one of the most active musicians of Canberra.

As Kim is set to move overseas for a few years from 2023, this show is her farewell and a thank you to her beloved Canberra people.

Believe this, it's really hard for Kim to leave. This is not a goodbye, life is always unexpected, sometimes we just have to roll with it.

Kim will be performing a solo set and a set with her wonderful band. Join Kim and her band for a fun and intimate lunch time show.
